Ex-nurse at Providence VA pleads guilty to stealing pills

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities say a woman who was a registered nurse at the Providence VA Medical Center has pleaded guilty to stealing prescription drugs from the center and falsifying her employment application.

United States Attorney Peter Neronha announced Monday that 47-year-old Lisa McManaman, of Providence, pleaded guilty Friday to theft of government property and false statements.

Prosecutors say McManaman used an automated medication dispensing system between May 2015 and October 2015 to obtain controlled-substance pills, including oxycodone and morphine. The pills weren’t prescribed for or provided to patients.

Prosecutors say she also failed to disclose on her employment application that in November 2013 she was fired from her job as a nurse in the intensive care unit of a Rhode Island hospital.

She’s scheduled to be sentenced May 13.
